本作品是白石老人晚年1948年在京的作品,白石老人一生渴求长寿、幸福、吉祥,所以“寿桃”、“一世平安”、“年年有余”、“菊酒延年”都是白石老人常画的题材。齐白石的祝寿画,以寿桃为最多。他爱画桃,求画者也喜欢他画桃。齐派桃是齐老最典型的红花墨叶派立宗的代表,大俗幻为大雅,受到世人喜爱。

通常所见齐白石画桃,以晚年为多,桃子或画于篮中,或画于树上。多采用“红花墨叶”的画法,先以没骨大写意法直接用洋红泼写硕大桃实,跃然纸上,艳而不俗,惹人喜爱。渗以少许柠檬黄,再以花青、赭墨写出叶子和枝干,后用浓墨勾勒叶筋,设色浓重艳丽。与其画荷花所创的红花墨叶恰成强烈对照。不仅桃实的分布颇具匠心,极臻疏与密、藏与露之妙,连寿桃的向背光都以颜色的变化来确切地表现出来。

齐白石对菊花的处理方法还是脱胎于吴昌硕,但区别还是比较明显。齐白石的菊花也是书写而成,而不是勾描出来的;在外形上多取“正圆形”的团状,有一定的图案化倾向,不太刻意表现自然状态下菊花的“不对称性”,虽然也注意菊花瓣在各个角度上的遮挡、开合、伸缩关系,但总体上还是趋于画家主观的意象化。颜色比较饱满艳丽,以红和黄两色为主,上色也相对较厚;早期菊花叶比较小,到了晚年变大而自由。近现代很多画家表现菊花都是以陶渊明“人淡如菊”的意象为主,着意于菊花在品格层面的追求。而齐白石更强调“延年”层面的美好寓意,如与鸽子相配,则“和平延年”;与酒坛相配,则“菊酒延年”。齐白石从不回避世俗百姓对“富贵”“长寿延年”“福禄”层面的表达,只是他笔下的意境除了祥瑞之外,更平添了淳朴与天真的自然气息。

齐白石的工笔草虫虽然对细节刻画细致,但是他并不是照搬客观事物,而是在追求画面真实的基础之上,寻求一种气韵。所以在欣赏他草虫画的时候给人一种生机盎然之气,并不呆板。草虫和花草瓜果相结合,这是生活中常见的场景,被齐白石画出了艺术美感,画面之中的草虫或走或飞,被齐白石赋予的艺术的生命力。这些草虫仿佛你靠近的时候,它会振翅高飞,活灵活现。有人说齐白石草虫只要学过写实画的人都可以画出来,尤其是一些画超写实油画的人,他们画草虫和齐白石有过之而无不及。但是要论其真实,的确有很多人可以画出照片的效果,而齐白石是在真实的基础之上求气韵,这是很多画家所达不到的,尤其是在当时的画坛,齐白石的草虫画具有开拓意义。不论是在形象上还是在气韵上,齐白石的草虫画都可以被称为草虫画的范本。我们可以看放大之后的效果,草虫翅膀、四肢颜色变化丰富,细看之下,四肢上的毛刺都画了出来,可见齐白石的观察仔细和精湛的艺术表达能力。

“四君子“是画家最为常见的题材。之所以称之为“自留地”,是缘于大部分画家都将至视为基本功,是进入中国画学习的必要途径,所以几乎很少有画家不能画这四种题材的。但是,倘若将“四君子”作为自己主攻的方向,其难度就陡然升高,其中还牵涉到人品的高度,我们从整体的姿态、枝干的多少、叶子的长势、用墨的浓淡等因素都可以反映出画家的修养高度与雅俗之别。它们的价值丝毫不逊色于那些看上去繁复的草虫飞禽,因为越是单纯的物象越无法藏拙,一个枝叶的方向就可以决定作品的高下。
